House League Philsophy

Our goal as SLI educators is to equip students with the confidence to take ownership of their success, and in doing so, prepare them to actively pursue and persevere through the steps necessary to achieve their long-term goals.  This type of confidence is best instilled in formative years, by rewarding the efforts that often go unnoticed.  Every child who puts in the hard work to learn the piano, practice karate, volunteer in an elders’ home, or start a project that builds constructive skills, will get the recognition they deserve, shaping their sense of agency with positive reinforcement. Furthermore, we place emphasis on the social inter-dependence that helps sustain balanced success across student careers.  A sense of belonging, as well as an understanding of how to leverage peer relationships to mutual benefit, are key in forming adaptable learning mindsets that thrive across evolving social environments.  As such, the point system has been developed to not only reward individual students but to, in turn, reward the students’ respective House League Teams.  This token economy well parallels the working society our students will one day join, where individual growth, teamwork, and leadership skills become assets that are instrumental in the growth of an entire company, city, nation, and even, perhaps, the entire world.  The House League system is aimed to motivate students to take initiative toward self-development, to foster an understanding of the interdependence of individual and group success, and to provide opportunities for students to take early leadership roles within the school and the broader community.
